“Ten flames. Ten names. Ten lives that became part of Ireland’s story. Their light still burns.” 🇮🇪🕯️
The Ten Candles is a powerful tribute to the ten men who gave their lives during the 1981 Hunger Strike in Long Kesh Prison.
Each candle represents one of the ten volunteers whose sacrifice became one of the defining chapters of modern Irish history. Their names are arranged in the order in which they died, their flames burning together as symbols of courage, conviction and remembrance. 🇮🇪
At the heart of the artwork stands a glowing Irish harp, its light rising above the darkness as a symbol of endurance and national identity. Around it are objects of memory and reflection — a blanket, a lily, a lantern and personal mementoes that speak to loss, sacrifice and the passage of time.
This piece was created not simply as a historical print, but as a work of remembrance. It is intended to honour the men who died and the generations who continue to remember them.
The ten candles commemorate:
• Bobby Sands
• Francis Hughes
• Raymond McCreesh
• Patsy O’Hara
• Joe McDonnell
• Martin Hurson
• Kevin Lynch
• Kieran Doherty
• Thomas McElwee
• Michael Devine
For many families across Ireland and throughout the Irish diaspora, the events of 1981 remain deeply personal. This artwork seeks to capture that memory in a respectful and visually striking way.
Whether displayed in a family home, study, reading room, Irish pub, cultural centre or heritage collection, The Ten Candles serves as a lasting reminder that sacrifice is never forgotten. 🕯️
